Yur’hir

Yur’hir Doula Services & Perinatal Education offers evidence-based perinatal support and classes. I believe that birth is a natural process and that all women and all birthing persons have the capacity to go through this experience in an empowered way and feel satisfied by it and with their body’s ability to create life.

As a doula, my goal is to support you and your family through the transition of welcoming of your new child in a way that is both non-judgmental, caring and informational. I will support you in many ways, depending if it is for birth and labour or for the postpartum period.

For Birth and labour, I will provide resources for birth planning, non-pharmacological comfort measures during childbirth, positive verbal encouragement, maintaining a positive environment, support in early chestfeeding or alternative feeding methods and emotional support. In the postpartum period, I will provide your family with physical support, like providing you with suggestions for an expedite recovery; emotional support, for example by listening to your birth story; informational support, providing you with information for example, on infant development; and practical support, like making simple meals, light house cleaning or other.

My aim as a perinatal educator is to help you be able to make informed and conscious decisions at the time of the birth of your child and that you feel confident as a parent as you embark the journey of parenthood. The idea is that you have the best experience they can possibly have, considering the unpredictability that comes in giving birth.

Your doula and educator: Maria Adelaida (she/her)

Maria Adelaida Ardila Hamilton doula and perinatal and childbirth educator

I live in Hamilton with my husband. Originally from Colombia, I’m fluent in English, French and Spanish and work with diverse families to help them transition into parenthood. Currently certifying as labour, birth, and postpartum doula, as well as a perinatal educator with Doula Canada, I look forward to working with you!
Passionate about birth and learning, I want to empower families so they have a smooth transition through pregnancy, birth and the first few months of parenthood. I want to help you create fond memories, supporting you with a myriad of techniques and evidence-based knowledge and information.
To stay inspired I love to learn new things. I read, I look out for documentaries, I chat with mothers about their experiences or read different birth stories, I listen to podcasts.
In my free time, I enjoy walking, reading and doing different crafts. I’m particularly fond of knitting and writing. Food has always been a passion of mine- I’ve even got a gastronomy degree-, and I love cooking different vegetarian dishes at home and baking sourdough bread. Living a more sustainable life is one of my priorities, so I’m always looking for changes or ways to look at things that may help lessen my impact on the planet.

Why the name Yur’hir?

Years ago, when in a long-distance relationship, saying goodbye with a “you’re here”, signaling the heart, became a tradition for my now husband and me. Especially when going through customs and migration, where it was not really possible to be heard. We pointed our fingers to our hearts. You’re here. With time, the signal transformed into something we said when times were especially challenging while being thousands of miles apart. Using the phonetic writing of “you’re here” as if it was pronounced in Spanish (Yurjir, now Yur’Hir) became a way of distinguishing it, making it a secret greeting of sorts. You’re here, you’re loved, you’re not alone.

Now, we are no longer away from each other but achieving goals and starting a new life together in Canada. I thought it was the moment to share our secret greeting with the rest of the world, especially as I embark the journey of becoming a doula. It’s something I wish for you as a client: that you feel seen, loved, that you enjoy and are in the present. In you body. You are here.
